Paws, Claws, Tales & Roars: The Next Generation
Barnsley Museums and Fusion, Barnsley’s Cultural Education Partnership are proud to present a display of winning artworks from the Art Competition for Schools 2024, celebrating the talents of children and young people (4-18 years) from across Barnsley.
Students were asked to take inspiration from the work of Brian Wildsmith and depict animals in their natural habitat with judges looking for originality, imagination, narrative and technical skill, as well as use of colour & texture.

'The Turtle' Lucy, Year 6, Lacewood Primary School ‘I decided to paint a turtle as I am attracted to the colours and textures of these animals living in their natural environment. They are also one of my favourite animals and I actually got to see one at an aquarium while on holiday in Greece. To create my artwork, I used a range of amazing techniques such as vibrant inks and vivid watercolours.’ -
'Antarctic Scene of Penguins' by Freya, Year 5, High View Primary School, ‘This is an Antarctic scene of penguins. One is searching for fish. One is wandering. One is eating fish’. 'The Robin' by Francesca, Year 4, The Ellis Church of England Primary School ‘I chose to do a robin as people say they are a sign that loved ones are near. I created my robin using oil pastels, it reminds me of my Nanny’. -
'Squirrel' by Maisy, Year 7, Horizon Community College ‘I drew the squirrel because they visit my garden. The picture shows a grey squirrel eating the acorns she has found. I enjoy art because I am creative, I enjoy using pastels to draw, I also love sewing.’ "My Cat" by Grace, Year 11, Horizon Community College, ‘I really love animals and considered being a vet so I thought it would be nice to link my interest of art and animals together. The picture is of my cat, his name is Socks. I think art is fun and something that I really enjoy, I am going to carry on studying this subject after Y11 at college.’ -
"The Kingfisher" by Ease, Year 5, Lacewood Primary School ‘As I love looking at different kinds of birds, I decided to paint a kingfisher. I especially love the wide range of colours and patterns they have. To create my art work I have used watercolour paint and fine white pen detail to add some texture to the feathers.’ "The Wolf" by Kainen, Year 6, The Ellis Church of England Primary School ‘I chose to paint a howling wolf as wolves are my favourite animal and I find them really interesting. I created light and shade when I created my background by layering the paint’. -
