Exhibition: Four Seasons In One Day

Immerse yourself in the changing seasons with our co-curated exhibition developed with the Action for Autism Barnsley group (AfAB).

AfAB is a small charity based in Barnsley Town Centre.  They run weekly sessions for adults who are neurodiverse.  They are a welcoming and friendly organisation with a membership of around twenty people. Getting involved with AfAB is an opportunity for people to be included in a wide range of activities whilst building friendships and social connections.

This is the second exhibition AfAB have collaborated with us on, following Allegories of the Senses in 2020 at the Cooper Gallery. 

In this exhibition, the group have used objects and artworks from the collections at Barnsley Museums. The artworks, objects and archives have been selected from the collections at the Cooper Gallery, Cannon Hall Museum and Experience Barnsley to create a multisensory exhibition that explores the themes of seasons, weather and nature.

There are sensory objects to explore in the exhibition through touch, sound and smell including specially crafted scents which the group have co-designed.

Meet The Curators

  • Brandon was born in 2003. His favourite colour is green and he has a keen interest in the existence of aliens and has been a firm believer of extra-terrestrial activity since he was young. Brandons favourite food is chicken balti.
  • Carl is a trained chef of 19 years. He has enjoyed cooking for 30 years. Alongside his cooking, Carl is also a magician and filmmaker. In the past he has also been a part-time wrestler. You might have heard Carl on the local radio or seen him on BBC TV for his charity work. You can find his Facebook page ‘Cooking with Carl.’
  • Chris is 34 years old and lives in Barnsley. He spends a lot of his time laughing. Chris practices his martial arts. He loves Thai food.
  • Dean is a fan of a Barnsley chop. He finds politics deeply amusing, his favourite colour is black cherry and his favourite season is summer. He likes the long days and the refreshing breeze but not the sticky horrible heat. He says that is not a problem in England, not with poor British weather.
  • Gary enjoys playing on his PlayStation 5, he likes reading books and listening to pop and rock music, his favourite band is Queen. He also likes watching WWE. Gary’s favourite wrestlers are The Rock and Triple H. Gary’s favourite seasons are Summer and Winter.
  • John plays the drums weekly. He is a Barnsley FC season ticket holder. He likes watching DVDs and likes to write non-fiction. John reads a lot; he is currently reading political books.
  • Kevin enjoys walking and, in the past, has walked up Mount Snowdon, Ben Nevis and Scafell Pyke. He has spent time researching his grandmother’s family tree. In the past Kevin has travelled to Florida. Part of Kevin’s work in the exhibition is the weather diary that he kept for many years. You will be able to hear his recording of this.
  • Rhiannon is so happy to be part of the exhibition. Her favourite season is Autumn. Rhiannon has a strong faith. She likes photography, travelling and good food. She sings in a rock choir, and you will often find her on an evening enjoying a glass of wine and relaxing.
  • Richard Thomas Brown was born in 1990 at Barnsley hospital. He loves cartoons and comics. His favourite food is healthy food. Richard enjoys reading and playing video games. His best memory is of being a toddler at a leisure centre where he joined in with creative dancing.
  • Robert was born in 1994, his favourite colours are blue and red. He is a fan of Disney and researching his family history. He also loves a good cup of tea. Robert is travelling to Disneyland Paris in April. He enjoys being a member of AFAB and likes to be the joker of the group.
